How to use a resume example without copying it

A good example saves you from the blank page, but recruiters can spot a resume that was copied word for word. Use these examples for three things: the order of sections, the kind of evidence that belongs in each bullet, and the vocabulary of the field. Then write every line about your own work. The people, schools and companies in the examples are invented, and so are the numbers, precisely so that nobody can paste them into a real application.

When you click Open in builder, the example loads into the editor as a new document. Your other saved resumes are not touched. Replace the name and contact line first, then work down section by section. If a section does not apply to you, delete it, and add others (projects, volunteering, languages) with one click.

How to choose the right example

Start with your situation rather than your dream job title. If you are still studying, the student example puts education and projects first. If you have finished school but never held a full-time job, the first job or no experience examples show how to turn part-time work, volunteering and training into evidence. Once you have a year or two in a field, a job example such as teacher, nurse or software engineer shows how professionals in that field present results.

Next, match the conventions of the country you apply in. In the United States and Canada the document is called a resume and tends to be short; the UK careers service Prospects notes that CVs are known as résumés in those countries. Harvard's career office advises leaving out a photo, age and gender on a US resume. If you apply in the UK or Europe, you may need a CV instead, usually on A4 paper; the CV examples page explains the differences, and every example here can open as a CV too.

What every strong example has in common

  • A clear headline. The job title or specialty under the name, so a reader knows in a second what you do.
  • Results in the bullets. Harvard lists "not demonstrating results" as a top resume mistake and recommends specific, active, fact-based language. Each example ends most bullets with an effect: a score, a saving, a launch, a number of people served.
  • Reverse chronological order. Most recent first within each section, as Harvard and the UK National Careers Service both advise.
  • Standard headings and one column. Greenhouse, an applicant tracking system, lists tables, graphics, headers and footers among causes of a failed parse. All examples use simple layouts that software can read.
  • Credentials where they matter. Licensed jobs (nursing, teaching, security) put the license in its own section, with a link to the official source on the example page.

After you edit your example

Run the ATS basics check in the editor. It scores contact details, headings, dates and bullet strength from 0 to 100 and suggests a fix for each issue; the ATS test method page lists every rule. Then download a text-based PDF on US Letter or A4 paper, without a watermark. Keep a backup of your work from the editor menu, because the data lives only in your browser. Finally, pair the resume with a cover letter; each job example links to a matching cover letter example that opens in the generator. For more designs, see the resume builder and its free templates.

Questions about these resume examples

Are these resume examples free to use?

Yes. Every example opens in the free builder, where you can edit it and download a PDF without a watermark or an account. The people and companies in them are fictional, so replace every detail with your own.

Can I copy a resume example word for word?

Use the structure and the type of evidence, but write the content about yourself. The examples contain invented names, employers and numbers, and recruiters value specific, true details about your own work.

Which resume example should I pick if my job is not listed?

Pick the closest situation first (student, first job, no experience) or the job with the most similar daily work, then adjust the headline, skills and bullets. More job examples are being added.

Do these examples work with applicant tracking systems?

They use a single column, standard headings and a text-based PDF, which avoids the layout problems Greenhouse lists as common causes of failed parsing. No resume can be guaranteed to parse in every system, so run the ATS basics check after editing.
