Data Analyst Resume Example With SQL and BI Results
A convincing data analyst resume connects your tools to decisions: which question you answered, which data you used, and what the business changed afterwards. The example below shows a fictional analyst supporting product and marketing teams, with SQL, Python and dashboard work tied to retention and time saved. Open it in the builder and swap in your own analyzes.

About this sample
Riley Chen, both employers and all the numbers are fictional. Notice how each bullet names a tool only when it explains the result: dbt in the bullet about replacing a manual step, Looker in the one about who uses the dashboard. The skills list then repeats the tools for recruiters who scan. The page fits US Letter in the Clean template, with the GitHub link as plain text.
What hiring managers expect a data analyst to do
Job titles vary (data analyst, business intelligence analyst, reporting analyst), but the work overlaps. O*NET's profile for business intelligence analysts includes generating reports that summarize business data, maintaining dashboards, databases and BI tools, getting information to users on time, and identifying trends with strategic implications. The software it lists includes Microsoft Power BI, Google Looker, Alteryx, Apache Spark, SQL Server Reporting Services, Excel, SAS, SPSS and Snowflake.
That gives you a checklist for the resume: show that you produce reliable reporting, keep it running, and turn it into insight people act on. Most postings want evidence of all three, not only technical skill.
Write bullets as question, data and decision
A bullet that says "created dashboards in Tableau" tells the reader nothing about your judgement. Try writing each one as a small case study:
- Question: what did someone need to know? ("Which onboarding steps lose new users?")
- Data and method: what you queried, joined or tested, in a few words.
- Decision or effect: what changed: a launch, a budget shift, hours saved, a metric that moved.
Harvard's career office lists "not demonstrating results" as a top resume mistake and recommends fact-based, quantified writing. Analysts have an advantage here because numbers are your daily material, but make sure each figure is one you can reproduce or explain in an interview, and never share confidential company data.
Portfolio, projects and certificates
For junior roles, a portfolio of two or three analyzes on public data can do the work that experience does for senior candidates. Choose projects that resemble the job: a cohort analysis for a subscription company, a demand forecast for retail, a public health dataset for healthcare. Link one repository or notebook in the contact line and add a short projects section. Online certificates are worth listing if they are recent and relevant, but they rarely replace evidence of real analysis. Students can follow the layout of the student resume example.
Keep the format simple enough to parse
It is tempting to design a resume that looks like a dashboard. Resist it. Greenhouse lists graphics, tables, headers and footers, and resumes uploaded as images among causes of failed parsing. Charts and skill-level bars do not survive. A single column with standard headings and a text-based PDF is the safe choice, and that is how every free template in the resume builder is built. After editing, run the ATS basics check; the ATS test method page explains what it measures.

Tips for your data analyst resume example
Start bullets with the question
Frame analyzes around the business question, then the method, then what changed.
Name tools inside results
Mention SQL, Python or Looker where they explain how you got an outcome, then list them again under skills.
Show a definition you fixed
Agreeing a metric definition across teams is a strong, often overlooked analyst achievement.
Link one clean project
A single readable notebook or repository beats a list of course badges.
Leave charts off the page
Graphics and skill bars break parsing. Let numbers in sentences carry the evidence instead.
Frequently asked questions
What skills should a data analyst put on a resume?
SQL, a scripting language such as Python or R, at least one BI tool (Power BI, Tableau or Looker), spreadsheet modeling, data cleaning, experiment analysis and stakeholder communication. Use the ones the posting asks for and that you have used on real work.
How do I write a data analyst resume with no experience?
Lead with two or three portfolio projects on public data that resemble the job, then education and any coursework in statistics or databases. Describe each project as question, method and finding.
Should I include a portfolio link?
Yes, if it holds work you are proud of. Put one link to GitHub or a notebook in the contact line as plain text so it survives parsing.
How long should a data analyst resume be?
One page for most analysts. Senior analysts or analytics managers with many projects can use two, keeping the most recent and relevant work first.
