Below are eight complete cover letter examples, each written for a different situation: a standard job application, an experienced professional, a recent graduate, a career change, an internship, a short email application, a referral and a speculative letter to a company that is not hiring yet. Every sample is a full letter, not a fragment, and each one has an Open in generator button that loads the same letter type and tone so you can swap in your own details and download a PDF.
All names, companies and numbers in these samples are fictional. They show structure and tone; the facts in your letter must be yours.
How to use these samples
- Pick the example closest to your situation, not the one with the job title closest to yours.
- Keep the structure: opening with the role, one matching achievement, why this employer, a clear request for an interview.
- Replace every detail with your own and add one result from your real work.
- Want a blank starting point instead? Use the cover letter templates.
Sample cover letter for a job application
This is the all-purpose version. It works for most advertised roles where you meet the main requirements. Notice how the second paragraph picks one requirement from the ad and answers it with a result.

Mr. Daniel Okafor
Harbour & Pine Outdoor
Dear Mr. Okafor,
I am writing to apply for the Marketing Coordinator position advertised on your website. I have three years of experience running email and social campaigns for a consumer brand, and the mix of planning and hands-on production in this role is exactly the work I enjoy.
At Fenwick Home Goods I manage a monthly newsletter sent to around 40,000 subscribers. Last spring I rebuilt our welcome series and tested new subject lines, and the click rate on the first email rose from 2.1 percent to 3.4 percent over three months. Your advert asks for someone who can plan campaigns and report on results, and that cycle of testing and reporting is a regular part of my week.
I have followed Harbour & Pine since your repair-and-reuse program launched, and I would be glad to help tell that story to more customers.
My CV is attached. I would welcome the chance to discuss the role in an interview. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Priya Shah

Ms. Angela Torres
Director of Operations
Crestline Distribution
Dear Ms. Torres,
I am applying for the Operations Manager role at Crestline Distribution. Over twelve years in warehouse and fulfillment operations, I have led teams of up to 60 people across two shifts, and I am ready to take on a site with the growth you describe in the posting.
In my current role at Midway Supply, I introduced a slotting review and a simple daily huddle for shift leads. Within a year, order picking errors dropped by about a third and we handled peak season without adding temporary staff. I also manage an annual operating budget and report monthly to the regional director.
Your posting mentions a new automated sorting line next year. I helped bring a similar system online at Midway, including retraining staff and adjusting shift patterns, and I would like to put that experience to work for Crestline.
I would welcome a conversation about your plans for the site. Thank you for considering my application.
Sincerely,
Marcus Bennett
Entry-level cover letter example for a recent graduate
Little work history is not a problem if the letter shows evidence of the skills the job needs. This sample uses a final-year project and a part-time job as proof. For more help with this case, see the guide to a cover letter with no experience.
Junior Data Analyst application (friendly)
For a first full-time job after university or college.

Hello Hiring Team,
I was excited to see the Junior Data Analyst opening at Maple Transit Analytics. I graduated this spring with a degree in statistics, and I would love to start my career working on data that affects how people move around the city.
For my final-year project I cleaned and analyzed two years of public bike-share trip data, built a dashboard of station demand by hour, and presented the results to a panel from the city's planning office. That project taught me to write clean SQL, check my assumptions, and explain charts to people who do not work with data every day.
I also worked 15 hours a week at the campus library help desk, where I learned to stay patient and organized during busy exam periods.
I would really enjoy bringing that mix of analysis and communication to your team. My resume and a link to the project are attached. Thank you for reading, and I hope we can talk soon.
Best regards,
Aisha Rahman
Career change cover letter example
When your resume comes from a different field, the letter has to translate. This example names the transferable skills directly and adds proof that the candidate has already started learning the new field.

Mr. Kevin Liu
Learning Team Lead
Summit Software
Dear Mr. Liu,
I am applying for the Instructional Designer position at Summit Software. After eight years as a middle school science teacher, I am moving into corporate learning, and your role is a close match for the skills I have used every day in the classroom.
Teaching taught me to break complex topics into short lessons, check understanding along the way, and adjust when something does not land. Last year I redesigned our school's seventh-grade lab unit into self-paced modules with short videos and quizzes, which colleagues in two other schools now use. This year I completed an online certificate in instructional design and built a sample onboarding module in a common authoring tool, which is linked in my resume.
Summit's focus on short, practical training for new customers is the kind of learning I want to create. I would welcome the chance to show how my classroom experience can help your customers get value from your product faster.
Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Elena Novak
Internship cover letter example
Internship letters can be shorter and more personal. Coursework, student societies and a clear reason for choosing this company carry the letter. The dedicated cover letter for an internship page has more variations.
Finance summer internship (friendly)

Dear Ms. Byrne,
I am a second-year accounting and finance student, and I would like to apply for the summer internship in your corporate finance team.
This term I am treasurer of our university's investment society, where I keep the accounts for a budget of a few thousand euro and prepare a short report for each committee meeting. In my financial modelling module I built a three-statement model for a listed retailer and came top of my tutorial group.
I am applying to Corrib Partners because your team works with growing Irish companies, and I would like to see how those businesses plan and raise money. I am a quick learner, careful with numbers, and happy to take on whatever the team needs.
My CV is attached. Thank you for considering my application, and I would be glad to talk at any time that suits you.
Kind regards,
Tom Gallagher
Short cover letter example for an email application
Some applications happen by email, and a long letter in the email body is hard to read on a phone. This concise version uses a few bullet points and still covers the role, the fit and the request.

Cover letter example with a referral
If someone at the company suggested you apply, say so in the first sentence, with their permission. It gives the reader an immediate reason to keep reading.
Graphic Designer, referred by a current employee (friendly)
For when a current employee has recommended you for the role.
Hello Ms. Kim,
Sam Ortiz on your brand team suggested I reach out about the Graphic Designer opening at Lumen Coffee Co. Sam and I worked together at a design studio for two years, and when I heard about the role I knew I wanted to apply.
For the past four years I have designed packaging and in-store displays for food and drink brands. My favorite recent project was a seasonal cup and bag series for a local bakery chain, from first sketches to print-ready files and a short guide for store staff on how to set up the displays.
I love how Lumen keeps a hand-drawn feel across everything from your cups to your website, and I would enjoy helping keep that consistent as you open new stores.
My portfolio and resume are linked below. Thanks so much for your time, and I hope to talk soon.
Warm regards,
Nadia Haddad

Speculative cover letter example (no advertised job)
A speculative letter goes to a company that has not posted a role. Prospects notes that these "can sometimes be an effective method of creating an opportunity," as long as you research the company first. Because you are not answering an ad, the letter has to say what kind of role you want and why this company. This format has its own tool: the letter of interest generator.
Project Coordinator at a nonprofit (formal)

Mr. Peter Otieno
Programs Director
Clear Water Trust
Dear Mr. Otieno,
I am writing to ask whether Clear Water Trust expects to need a project coordinator for its school water programs in the coming year. I have followed your work in Kisumu County, and I would very much like to contribute to it.
For the past three years I have coordinated community health projects for a regional nonprofit, managing schedules for field teams, tracking budgets, and preparing monthly reports for two international donors. I am comfortable working between field staff, local officials and head office.
I have attached my CV in case a suitable role opens. I would be grateful for a short conversation to learn more about your plans and how someone with my background might help.
Thank you for your time.
Yours sincerely,
Grace Mwangi
What good cover letter samples have in common
Read the eight letters side by side and the same pattern shows up, whatever the job or tone:
| Pattern | Where you can see it | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| The role is named in the first two lines | Every example | The reader knows at once which job this is for |
| One concrete result or piece of evidence | Marketing (click rate), Operations (picking errors), Graduate (bike-share project) | Proof is more convincing than adjectives |
| A specific reason for this employer | Repair program, automated line, hand-drawn brand | Shows research, as Harvard advises |
| A clear request at the end | Interview, conversation, call | Prospects suggests ending with your desire for an interview |
| One page or less | Every example | Career offices recommend a single page |
The tone changes (formal for the operations and nonprofit letters, friendly for the graduate and referral letters, concise for the email) but the structure does not. Choose the tone that fits the company. A bank or public body usually expects formal; a startup or creative studio often reads a friendly letter more warmly.
Mistakes these samples avoid
- Opening with "My name is..." instead of the role.
- Repeating every job from the resume.
- Claims with no evidence, such as "I am a hard worker."
- A closing that asks for nothing.

Frequently asked questions
Can I copy one of these cover letter examples?
Use them as a model for structure and tone, then replace every detail with your own experience. The names, companies and numbers in the samples are fictional, so a copied letter would not describe you.
Which cover letter example should I choose?
Choose by situation, not job title: advertised job, senior role, first job, career change, internship, email application, referral or speculative letter. Then match the tone to the company.
How long should a sample cover letter be?
One page or less. The examples here run from about 100 to 250 words in the body, which fits on one page with a header and sign-off.
Do these examples work with a resume and a CV?
Yes. A cover letter goes with either. The US examples mention a resume and the UK and Irish ones a CV, which reflects how each country names the document.
What happens when I click Open in generator?
The cover letter generator opens with the matching letter type and tone. You fill in your own details, see the letter update, and download a PDF or copy the text. Nothing is sent to a server.
