How to use the cover letter generator

The whole flow takes a few minutes and happens on this page. Nothing is uploaded while you write.

  1. Pick the letter type

Start with the general cover letter, or switch to the experienced, entry level, internship or career change version if one of those describes you better.

  2. Choose a tone

Formal suits banks, law, government and traditional employers. Friendly suits startups and smaller teams. Concise is a short, bullet-style letter for busy recruiters.

  3. Fill in the fields

Every gap in the letter becomes a field with an example. Write your achievement as something you did, with a number if you honestly have one.

  4. Check the highlighted gaps

Anything still in brackets is highlighted in the preview. The download buttons tell you which field is still empty, so nothing half-finished reaches an employer.

  5. Compare with the job ad

Paste the job ad into the optional matcher to see which repeated words from the ad your letter already uses, then adjust your wording.

  6. Download or copy

Download a PDF (A4 or US Letter), copy the text into the body of an email, or save a .txt file to paste into an online application form.

What this generator writes, and what it does not

The generator works from templates written for this site. Each template has three versions of the same letter, and every place where your story belongs is marked with a field. When you type, the field text drops into the letter exactly as you wrote it. The result reads like a letter written by a person, because the structure was, and the specifics come from you.

It does not invent facts about you. There is no AI writing step at the moment, so the letter never claims a skill, a result or a qualification you did not type. That matters: a recruiter who reads "I increased sales by 40%" will ask you about it in the interview. If you want help phrasing an achievement, start from the example in the field and replace every detail with your own.

You can also use the output as a first draft. Copy it into your own document, rewrite the opening line in your own voice, and keep the structure: why this job, proof you can do it, why this company, and a clear close.

The structure of a strong cover letter

Most good cover letters follow the same four-part shape, and every template here uses it:

  • Opening: the role you want and one line on why you fit. Hiring teams often read many applications for one opening, so say what you are applying for in the first sentence.
  • Evidence: one or two results from your work, study or volunteering that match what the job ad asks for. Concrete beats general: "cut response time from 9 hours to 3" says more than "hard-working".
  • Fit with the company: something specific you know about the employer, its product, its customers or its mission. This is the part a generic letter cannot fake.
  • Close: point to your resume, say you are available to talk, and thank the reader.

Keep it short. Harvard's career office advises keeping cover letters "concise and factual, no more than a single page", and every template here fits on one page with normal-length answers.

Which letter type should you choose?

The five letter types share the same engine but stress different evidence:

  • General: works for most applications when you have some relevant experience.
  • Experienced professional: leads with years in the field and two results, one recent and one earlier, to show a track record.
  • Entry level or graduate: leads with your qualification, coursework and a project, because that is your strongest proof so far.
  • Internship: names your year of study, your program and your dates of availability, which internship coordinators need to see first.
  • Career change: explains the move from your previous field, the skills that transfer and the training you completed.

If you are writing to a company with no open vacancy, use the letter of interest tool instead. If the employer asks for an "application letter" in a formal format, the application letter tool names the vacancy and where you found it.

Sending your cover letter: PDF, email body or form

How you send the letter depends on the application:

  • Upload to a job portal: use the PDF. It is built from real text with embedded fonts, so it can be selected, searched and read by applicant tracking software. Greenhouse, a widely used hiring system, lists .pdf, .doc, .docx, .rtf and .txt as supported formats for cover letters.
  • Email: copy the text and paste it into the body of the email, with the subject line shown under the preview. Attach your resume as a PDF.
  • Plain text box in an online form: download the .txt file or use Copy text. Plain text pastes cleanly without stray formatting.

Name the PDF file clearly. The generator suggests the letter type plus your name, for example cover-letter-jordan-lee.pdf, so the recruiter can find it again.

Your details stay on your device

Everything you type is stored in your browser's local storage on this device, under one record that all the letter tools share. That is why your name and email are already filled in when you open the thank you email or the resignation letter tool later. Nothing is sent to a server, and there is no account to create. The PDF is built inside your browser too. To remove your details, press "Clear my details", or clear this site's data in your browser settings.

Jordan Lee Manchester, UK | [email protected] | +44 7700 900123 October 25, 2026 Ms. Rivera Northwind Health Dear Ms. Rivera, I would like to apply for the Customer Success Manager role at Northwind Health. I bring 5 years of experience in customer support operations and solid data reporting skills, and I am ready to put both to work for your team. In my current role as Customer Support Lead at Brightline Logistics, I cut the average ticket response time from 9 hours to 3 hours in one year. That work taught me to balance quality with deadlines and to keep people outside my own team informed and on board. What draws me to Northwind Health is your focus on making healthcare billing easier to understand. The responsibilities in this role match the work I do best, and I would welcome the chance to bring the same care and results to your team. My resume is attached with more detail. I would be glad to discuss in an interview how I can support Northwind Health. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Jordan Lee

Cover letter generator FAQ

Is this cover letter generator really free?

Yes. Writing, previewing, copying and downloading the PDF or .txt file are free, with no watermark and no sign-up. The optional Premium Pass (US$9, one-time payment, no subscription) only adds premium templates; the free letters stay free.

Can ChatGPT generate a cover letter?

Yes, a chatbot can draft one, but you still have to check every claim, tailor it to the job and format it for sending. This generator takes the opposite approach: a proven structure with fields for your real details, so nothing appears in the letter that you did not write yourself.

Is my information uploaded anywhere?

No. Your details are saved only in this browser on this device, and the PDF is created in the browser as well. Clearing your details or your browser data removes them.

How long should a cover letter be?

One page or less. Three or four short paragraphs are usually enough: the role, your evidence, why this employer, and a close. All templates here fit on one page with normal answers.

Will the PDF work with applicant tracking systems?

The PDF contains real, selectable text with embedded fonts and no images of text, which is what parsing software needs. No tool can promise how every employer system will read a file, so keep the layout simple, as these templates do.

Should I write a different cover letter for every job?

Yes, at least the company paragraph and the evidence you choose. Your saved details stay filled in, so tailoring a new letter usually means changing the company, the job title, the reason for interest and perhaps one achievement.

Can I write a cover letter with no experience?

Yes. Choose the entry level or internship type. They lead with your qualification, coursework, a project and part-time or volunteer work instead of job history.
